For an active rescue, or for standby duty?
I find it VERY hard to beleive they are the closet available team...considering how most LI departments are robustly equipped.
I also wonder if the residents of the county they are from might not be better served if need be?
In any event, safe travels, and may your skills and services be not needed.

Or All departments that meet the minimum training and staffing requirements as established by FDNY and OFPC. Since it is their drill to exersize their plan and the state mobilization plan.

Not knowing the building is not an excuse. "I am sorry sir, but we can not fight this fire with an aggressive interior attack and search because we do not know the building".......This would go over like a lead ballon. We learn building construction to understand different types of buildings and what to expect. But no matter how aggressive a department is at building inspection and preplanning the dept will never see the inside of the majority of structures before the fire and if they do the chances that an individual firefighter will have seen it is almost 0.

Took me a while to figure out what your beef is but now I got it. You seem to have a problem with CIty of Newburgh calling the Air Guard and West Point. Maybe you should take it through the channels and let them know you will will be able to respond within a certain amount of minutes with a full interior crew everytime you are called. Then you might have a beef but right now it appears many department "hit and hope". Didn't Newburgh have to rotate mutual aid anyway because the closest departments complained about being called too much? Did you have complaints about that arrangement?

There are tons of cases where personal feelings change alarm assignments and that is categorically wrong. But it is also true that your next door neighbor isn't always the best crew for the job. You have to factor in training and manpower. While we're beating the dead horse, if NYS would step up to the plate and make a universal standard to be a firefighter we could avoid this. Sorry for the suggestion, FASNY.

An IC at a job, career or volley shouldn't have to find out the qualifications of the mutual aid he called. They should be qualified to perform the tasks assigned to them, have a officer able to make decisions and get the job done and not be another thing the IC has to worry about he's got enough already. Carreer depts in Westchester call each other cause they know what they're getting.

Dan, I caught this today crossing Mill @ Catherine. The answer to who cares? They had a Sanford and Son packed with enough lights to make the biggest volly jealous and shot across three lanes of high speed traffic, and for what? It's unfortunate that someone died but there's no hurry, that situation isn't changing, and it's wrong to risk putting other people in said hearse over it.

It will be September 11th. And here we are 11 years later. The most infamous day of our generation has a meaning to every American. Everyone was affected that day. Some obviously much more than others.
I think about our New York City Brothers and Sisters from the jobs. Some of the people that I know personally, absolutely amaze me/have amazed me as they picked themselves up from the dust and debris and carried on doing their jobs. They've taught me so much about personal fortitude and inner strength.
There's one guy I know and love. He was a Bronx truckie, a Brooklyn truckie, a Manhattan truckie. He's one of the few that wears a two star 9/11 medal. Lost so many personal friends, I honestly to this day have a hard time understanding how he was able to carry on.
Yeah, he got banged up pretty good and had to put his papers in. Aside from the hundreds of heroes who were lost, with all of their combined experience and knowledge, it amazes me how the FDNY in particular was able to rebuild itself in the aftermath of a loss of such magnitude.
This Brother though, he is so knowledgeable about the fire service; the FDNY losing him to premature retirement was yet another huge loss for the agency. He could have easily been a great Chief Officer.
Yet, with the personal losses this Brother endured, he not only carried on through the physical and emotional pain, he has still been able to contribute to the fire service in other ways; with his knowledge and desire to help others he has done that and more.
To say that I am in awe of this Brother would be an understatement.
I continually ask myself how this man does it. In many ways, he has been a mentor to me. He has been there for me when times have been difficult. Always a reassuring voice, always positive, always pointing out the things I should be grateful for. Reminding me not to dwell so much on personal failures, loss, and things that cannot be changed.
I thank God for a Brother like him. He has taught me so much, I cannot begin to say how I feel about him. About never being able to adequately express my gratitude for his friendship, his mentoring, his Brotherhood. I grew up without an older brother, and always wished I had one. God sent this man my way in the aftermath of 9/11, and I honestly feel like he became that brother I always wished I had.
In two days, the Remembrance Ceremonies will take place. It is repeatedly a heart wrenching day. I feel and will always remember the sacrifices our Brothers and Sisters made for the good of others; for the good of all of us.
Many people have forgotten. To much of the country, 9/11 was a television experience. The wars have been that way for most of us as well. It is our duty, as emergency service personnel to keep the flame of memory alive for our lifetimes.
You know, I never truly understood what WWII veterans felt about Pearl Harbor until the years slowly built up after 9/11. Now I do.
And for my Brother, I know enough to let him alone in the days leading up to 9/11, and the days afterward. For him, it is entirely personal. But I'll be thinking about him anyway, along with the heroes who left us that day. Thinking, remembering, and saying thank you once again.

Wow, that's some coin. In fact $13.9 million would cover our FD budget for 7 years, which coincidentally would be how long it would take them to have the same number of incidents we cover in 1 year.

I found the following on the DOJ's website.....
Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (OMGs) are organizations whose members use their motorcycle clubs as conduits for criminal enterprises. OMGs are highly structured criminal organizations whose members engage in criminal activities such as violent crime, weapons trafficking, and drug trafficking. There are more than 300 active OMGs within the United States, ranging in size from single chapters with five or six members to hundreds of chapters with thousands of members worldwide. The Hells Angels, Mongols, Bandidos, Outlaws, and Sons of Silence pose a serious national domestic threat and conduct the majority of criminal activity linked to OMGs, especially activity relating to drug-trafficking and, more specifically, to cross-border drug smuggling. Because of their transnational scope, these OMGs are able to coordinate drug smuggling operations in partnership with major international drug-trafficking organizations (DTOs).
Just because you may know some of them and they are "charitable" doesn't mean they aren't part of a criminal organization. When you see a gang poster in a precinct, the hells angels are listed right along side the bloods and the crips, they are all gang members there is no difference.

Good point Sue, that's kind of what I meant about controlling ventilation though. I've been hearing a lot lately about the push to control ventilation INSIDE the building, because an amazing amount of fire and gases can be contained with a simple door or window being shut. Underwriters Laboratories study down in NYC and a few others are re-affirming that controlling your access/egress points can have a substantial effect on the fire spread and make your life a lot easier when it comes to controlling it. It almost sounds like a no-brainer thing to talk about, because we tell civilians to do it when their houses are on fire, but its often forgotten by the FD on the fireground.
Unfortunately I've also heard a lot of chatter after this report about NOT searching above the fire floor without a hoseline, that I disagree with. I cannot remember a time when I've had a hoseline on a search of the floor above. Most departments are not making their Truck Company drag a charged hoseline around during their aggressive primary search, its just not an efficient use of resources. That being said, in apartments like the one in this fire, its absolutely critical your second line gets in to protect that common interior stairwell to ensure ALL your personnel have a safe means of egress.
