Some of the "Best" firefighters I know were and still are "Buffs"! Id take them any day over the s*** that's coming on the Job! It's as if your not allowed to have an interest in your Profession, God forbid you do that!

The second photo is the 1901 horse drawn, gasoline engine, piston pump from the Oakland, NJ Fire Department. This was original equipment in the Borough of Oakland which was donated by our first Chief, Ludo Wilkens. He owned and operated a brush factory in Oakland, NJ in the early 1900s.The department still maintains the pumper, although it has not been started in quite a few years. The tall firefighter in the photo is my late brother, John Seifert. The gentleman to the right wearing the dark baseball cap is Harry Egan.
Great memories of the musters there! I believe that rig won first place in the "Most Unusual" category.

Some firehouses are in neighborhoods with incredible foot traffic. Some are close to tourism centers. The attention can be very flattering and having a good relationship with the visiting public is good for the image of the fire service.......and t-shirt sales! Kidding aside, I assure you we all value the attention to some degree for it's importance on many levels. However, if you're visiting a firehouse, don't over stay your welcome. I've had out of towners stop by and it's great for a bit. A little tour, a chat and then that's it. Example: 54 engine and 4 truck are in the theater district. They run like crazy, like 5,000+ runs for the engine and 4,000 for the truck. Squeeze in a drill period in the afternoon and evening, a couple of meals and you're not left with a lot of time in the day.....
P.S.- I'm a buff. I resent that term being associated with this skank.

The Fire District purchased our first staff vehicle from J.H. Ketcham in Dover Plains, a 2005 Ford Expedition, with a command center in the back, once I get a chance I will see about getting some further photos, although not new, it's a start in the right direction, Chief Boardman just picked the unit up from the graphics shop in Carmel. Yes I know it's not Blue!!!!

My dad first wave Omha beach 75TH Infintry H-291 20 years old street smart Port Chester kid kicked a**. On to Bastone , Arden Forest, then Germany. Silver star, bronze star and 2 Purple Harts. Came home to mom but for those that don't know 188 from Port Chester did not. Port Chester has the sad distinction of having the most men in the United states killed in the line of duty from one street. Willow street gave up 8 men and it is only 600 feet long .

Holy crap. I just realized I spent a day at Station 68 a couple of years ago, and even posted the photos. Same shift, too. Small world, very sad. Station 68 is one of the busiest in the city as well.
Rob Garner was the Probie at the time, and operating the BBQ.

The article eludes to technical issues, but it sounds like there are many more. Is some of it training? "figuring things out" is not really something you want to hear from a surgeon, dentist or your 911 dispatcher.

Caught Hartsdale FD TL-15 back in service this morning, after being absent for a couple of years.
It appears as if the boom interior was refurbished, the hydraulic lift pistons repaired, and a repaired bucket with side panels (vs the curtains) and bucket mount fabricated. All the other components on the boom remain the same (reels, lights, controls etc). As far as the body, only difference I saw was the convex mirror was moved to the middle of the front of the truck. Basically just the damage repaired. Maybe someone from HFD could give us further details.

To all the FDNY members on this site- you don't know how lucky we are/were, with the FDNY shops and radio repair, etc. The field crew (on-duty FDNY mechanics who respond to qtrs for app repairs) has always been top-notch. They try to repair whatever they can, to prevent you having to get a spare and change over the rig (PAIN in the ASS, esp. for the engine co., with all the hose to change over. The radio repair guys come to qtrs to fix any problems with the mobile data terminal (MDT) or siren or app radio; the tire repair guys respond to wherever you end up with a flat, and throw on a new tire. I dare say that most career depts. on this site aren't that lucky?!
I recall many years ago, when I "vested/retired" from FDNY and got a job as a shift commander in a west coast Florida county FD. The rigs were in fairly poor condition, and anytime there was a problem with one of the pieces, we had to tow it/drive it to the county repair shop, where they repaired all county vehicles- there was no specific "fire apparatus mechanic". Needless to say, the rigs were not always repaired correctly. After 8 months there, I was lucky enough to get back on FDNY. It was quite an experience, looking back. One of the better firefighters on my shift (who grew up on LI) asked me one day-"Cap, why did you leave the "Yankees" to come play with the "Port charlotte RedHens"? I asked myself that question every day until I got back to the Big Apple. Nothing beats playing with the Big Guys!
