New York State Senator Greg Ball has renewed the call to reinstate the death penalty in New York for anyone who murders a police officer. The link below will take you to an online petition that senator Ball has started, I would urge you all to take 2 seconds and sign or at least read up on this effort. It seems that every time a cop is killed in New York, the call is renewed for the death penalty but it never seems to get done, Hopefully this time the senate and the assembly will act quickly to make this law. Even if it deters one person from killing a cop, that's one life saved and to me that's worth it. Stay safe and stay vigilant my brothers and sisters.

I've got to be honest here, I see all too often in some of these threads about VACs, the whole "well XYZ VAC covered 85% of their calls in 20xx!" To me, and I'm sure to several of my collegues, that is a joke! These agencies are certified and tasked with providing a service to the public, a very important service, EMS. I'm sorry if this ruffles a few feathers in VAC land, but nothing less than 100% coverage(that is of course with the exception of simultanious calls)is acceptable in my opinion. Who are we kidding here? If the system is broken, fix it! Give up the "smoke in mirrors" show, respond to something other than parades, carnival/event standbys, and "hot jobs." You may have the newest shiniest rigs, freshest uniforms, and plenty of portable radios, but until fulfill what your agency is required to do under its C.O.N., your system is broken. Sorry if I'm harsh, but I think its time to put public service before pride!
DISCLAIMER: This isn't referring to Croton EMS, or any other EMS agency at all. Just a blanket statement.

Ah...no. You know me very very well..and when I have a problem...I voice it. I go through the channels I need to, to point it out...but you know I don't say anything I won't say to a person or people involved. So you know some crews have gotten and earful from me when the "ALS intercept" parade was going on for calls that were clearly made to the company requesting ALS transport. So instead of turning it down or telling them to simply call 911..they would send a BLS bus and then they would request ALS through 911. 9 times out of 10...I and my colleagues would arrive on scene with the patient just barely on the stretcher. That's abusing my system for the benefit of that agency. That doesn't fly to me. Anything else I can say I keep to myself because those were professional explanations to others that wore a paramedic patch..the state one..not the one on the company patch. No one who calls for a helicopter in my district should be surprised that we show up...and then attempt to catch an attitude when I cancel it when it was more then clear it wasn't needed. Only to attempt to state protocol which wasn't even correct at that. But I'll shut up now.

It's like the old saying, you get what you pay for. If we(public services) start doing things for free because it's what's morally right, we won't be around very long. The people will fight and say, as was stated above, he didn't pay and still got protection, so im not going to pay. Our money will dry up faster than you can blink an eye.

Because to answer his question, you first have to admit there is a problem. Getting people to do that....You may having better luck finding a pot of gold.

I take back what I said, yes it is an FAA requirement, but I have been on the ramp of many terminals, and I can say with confidence, that the only two people paying attention are the Line Marshaller, and the chock guy just to make sure he is out of the way. The wing walkers are most of the time, A: not there, or B: sitting on the baggage equipment. It's the same way with when your backing an apparatus, if you can't see them, stop, until you can.
This was a pretty obvious wingstrike. Do you think a (competent)wingwalker was there? Kinda hard to miss a big yellow firetruck.

I gotta say....I'm a little disappointed to read some of the comments that are written here. Why are we so excited to see this movement broken up? You don't have to agree with everything they're saying or rallying for down there. You also don't have to like the people who are doing it, BUT it's nice to see a little activism. It's nice to see people pushing back against the establishment because it's our constitutional right. The basis of this action is very similar to the founding of this country. Lets not be so quick to get excited that they're being "shut down".
I don't like a bunch of leaches and do nothings, but I also don't like some CEO's salary increasing 23% while his company sheds 10,000 jobs or the bank he runs won't lend money to the honest working man. The balance of power and wealth in this country is more lopsided than it's ever been.
Remember, if you're a civil servant (as I am)or any other Union worker, these protesters are your friend! They like you. They want you to make more money and be taxed less. The people that they're rallying against want to reduce your pension because it's too lucrative. They want to close firehouses because they'll never need you. They want to ship jobs to India because it'll leave them more money to pay themselves.
Look, it's probably about time they shut down this camp-site and cleaned up the park which must be a disaster. However, lets not be so quick to jump for joy at the end of a protest that has the working man's ideals in mind.

It's like the old saying, "measure twice, cut once." The FDNY orders all their rigs from generation to generation with the same specs. That way, there's no issues with fitting into their firehouses.

Maybe the rocking of the ladder with the wind and the drone of the draffic on the bridge will lull him to sleep. Would be a shame if he dozed off and fell. One good thing, less paperwork.

By looking at the picture that ALS posted above, I would absolutely disagree with you, but that's your opinion and your entitled to it. I think that from the perspective of someone not affiliated with the dept, i.e. the public, this is a great way to start a conversation with someone that may be walking past the firehouse, or someone you see on a call. Truely a great PR piece, as Peekskill and White Plains, along with others are showing. The article about WPFD proves it.

  21. newsbuff liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Article from Yorktown fire (10/3/11)
Then give them each a tanker
My point was you might not even be good for 2 fires. If 7 of the tankers are from the West & 7 from the East, all west ones are committed, the east ones may be too far or if they are sent to cover, there wont be enough left in the east or in the west.
Yes you can what if this to death, but the departments that collectivly own 14 tankers also own 46 engine companies. It appears then that with 46 engine companies they would be able to cover more than 2 fires, but without enough water........we all know what will happen. The taxpayers have collectivly invested approximatly $21 million in these engine companies (assuming a fully equipped engine costs $450,000)and not including maintenance, insurance, fuel, housing, etc. and they would be stretch to handle more than 2 fires?
Even if we doubled the numbers, we are talking a huge area to cover and with all of those units covering 2 1/2 counties and 100's of thousands of properties, the chance of 2 or 3 fires is pretty good.

For those of you that don't know who the merchant marine is, it is the fleet of U.S. civilian-owned merchant vessels.
Seeing as how 9/11 was a few days ago, and I just found this video, I think this speaks volumes about how much the merchant marine is ready, willing, and able to help in times of need.
So, If you have 12 minutes,
