This is brought up EVERY parade season.  The answers never change, and neither does the inadequate level of response.

Effort and "wanting to" respond doesn't put out fires. The citizen isn't gonna say "Oh well, you had to work so it's ok that my husband died because it was 'impossible for the volly to respond'."

The citizens DEMAND a service that responds in a quick and efficient matter EVERY SINGLE TIME.  Anything less is doing a disservice to the community.

If you reread my post,  you might figure out that the people I was calling sneaky, was the city administration, NOT the rank and file members.  As stated above,  the unions tried to say "it isn't fair that we have to pay city income tax while not residing in the city." and they would be right as a stipulation that you pay income tax based on your home of record.   For NYC(Administration) to then just make it a "fee" for working there,  THAT is the BS part.

I guess you didn't read any of the above comments.  There is no provision stating that you must stay in the City after being hired.  Many people move out of the city after getting on, especially because of NYC income tax.  Too damn expensive to live there.

As a starting point.....Change the name of the thread to VOLUNTEER VS. CAREER.

This entire issue was manufactured by a small group of completely incompetent volunteer fools wearing Fire Chief costumes from the Port Chester FD.

Sorry if the truth may hurt for some of the pro-volunteer carrot snappers on this board, but this story is going to sting for awhile (as it should).

Contrary to the claim of one "dinosaur" here......This has everything to do with career and volunteer relationships and the absolute jealousy that a few complete losers from PCFD attempted to enact upon 8 unionized firefighters who did not conform to their failing regime.

Speaking out earned them being thrown out.

Except, the labor world is a bit harder to con than the archaic volunteer fiefdoms that these pieces of trash have matriculated through.

    Open check book PCFD.

    Elections have consequences.

    Seth,
I work for a career department with four stations and fifteen members on duty per shift. We are frequently down to one single resource in town. (We only have one engine that doesn't cross-staff an ambulance.) We handle the calls as they come in, and yes, when an EMS call comes in and we only have one resource left, we send it. HOW COULD YOU NOT? Someone has called for help. You're going to tell them: sorry, can't come, there MIGHT be a fire. Good luck explaining THAT one.
It is far easier to explain that someone had to wait for help because ALL resources were tied up than to try to explain that you were saving an engine for a REAL call.
And yes, if ANY higher priority call comes in and you haven't made contact with the patient yet, I would divert to that call. Falls under doing what is right.

More duplication of services! Gotta love it.

If you can't read the simple damn directions on a written test, why should you be hired? If everyone complains that it's "sooooo easy", why is this even a question? Sounds like you don't know how to follow simple written instructions.

No, it is not a DQ or an automatic failure and no they do not take points off. As long as they answered the required 60 questions for the towns and villages, the only things anyone who did all 105 was waste time and energy on unnecessary questions...and yes...prove that they can not follow simple instructions...

wow really!!! so I guess you have no problem being teamed up with someone who CANT do this and he/she is your interior partner.
How did the instructors become the enemy in your mind?

This will actually eliminate some of the candidates that should not even be accepted into the departments. Some departments are so desperate that they will accept anyone with a pulse and that does not help with the mission.

For a specialized unit that gets called only a handful of times per year, I don't really see how just one team covering the north part of the county, plus the County PD team, is an issue. We only have 3 Haz-Mat units for the entire county, simply because you don't need more than that.

How does this leave a "large" void? Yorktown, a large bordering district, has a dive team. Seems like a good move to me, less duplication of resources.

In NYC, the FDNY rarely gets to do this, because the traffic units will have it on the hook and off to the yard, long before the FD gets a call.
