That was really my point, albeit reading back on it, it didn't come out clear at all. Run numbers mean absolute jack. It's stats like BFD1054 is asking for that really matter.

How about posting the numbers that mean something; i.e. Response times, # of INTERIOR FFs per call, etc?

Yup, life does go on, but that doesn't mean that we (as firefighters) should use life going on as an excuse to not take out time every year to honor all of the first responders who were murdered on 9/11/01. And, in case you haven't kept up with what's going on in the fire service, thousands of 9/11 first responders are seriously ill due to the time they spent at the World Trade Center site and many have died from various cancers. 9/11 is still affecting responders and their families in a very bad way over 13 years after the attacks. Clearly you have no problem planning non 9/11 related events specifically on 9/11 rather than any other day of the year and clearly you have no knowledge of (or don't care to acknowledge) what this event did to the firefighters, EMS personnel and law enforcement personnel who responded, lost lot's of close friends, relatives and co-workers that day as well as in the years that follow, are haunted by the effects of PTSD as well as cancers, and chronic health issues. Anyone can dress like a first responder, but not everyone has what it takes to actually be one. God bless all those who were murdered that day, suffer from chronic illness and continue to die directly as a result of the bravery, dedication and patriotism they exhibited when our country was attacked. And don't forget, our nation's first responders are dealing with the ongoing threat of terrorist attacks still to this day.

Does that mean that rather than playing golf on 9/11 your members will attend a 9/11 remembrance?

It's so sad that some folks who live in NYS (within an hour or less ride from NYC) and dress like firefighters don't understand that 9/11/2001 was the most tragic event that the American fire service ever experienced. HUNDREDS of first responders (firefighters, police officers and EMS personnel) were murdered that terrible day, THOUSANDS more are suffering from disabling effects of the exposure they had to the many toxins at the WTC site during the rescue and recovery operation and HUNDREDS more have died due to their exposure to the toxins. It definitely is not asking too much for members of the fire service to honor one day out of 365 every year. I worked with and was close friends with many of the Firefighters who were murdered that day and although some people here claim to know that these fallen heroes would want 9/11 to be just another day, I know that is not what any of them would want. These heroes come from a culture that has tremendous respect for our nation, our first responders and their families. I've retired from the job and live in Florida. Down here (1200 miles away from NYC) Firefighters honor 9/11 every year with remembrance events and fundraisers. These men and women get it, I'm sorry that some of you don't.

    1) So please tell, I have been active in both volunteer depts. and in the union and I would like to know because we have way more important things to worry about than that. My efforts have never been to work against VFD's but to get them to open their eyes and see that everything is changing and they need to change too. And if they do not they will fail. Its a big conspiracy....we meet late at night to cover up the Kennedy assassination and to destroy the VFD's...not.
    2) Actually based on the latest figures put our by NFPA it has dropped to about 60%. And its been dropping by about 4-7% per year on a national level. Also consider that career depts. protect approximately 80% of the population of the U.S. and respond on 80 - 90% of the calls for fire service.
    3) So did I and my former FD still calls me for advise thank you and I gladly assist them.
    4) That's great. As you said, "more than most"....Then my comments do not affect your dept. but they affect many depts. that (career and volunteer) that do not meet the standards.
    5) Its not volunteer bashing. Its pointing out substandard service and it does not mater if its vol, combo or career. I have nothing against volunteers, I have a lot of issue with those that fail to uphold their oath and failing to speak out when you know their is a problem is no different. Its to bad you can not see that.

Trained to the same standard regardless of the patch on their sleeve. Makes the concept of mutual aid pretty easy to implement. Everyone who shows up has the same basic training. Imagine that?
FD7807, you're missing our (at least my) point. Want to clear up a lot of the BS that exists in the NY fire service today? Adopt one common standard for FF training. That's a huge step in the right direction.
There will always be differences from department to department but if they basic training is the same regardless of patch or pay status, we'd all be better off.

"BFD Golf Outing: September 11, 2015" I was under the impression that members of the fire service are either on duty or attending remembrance ceremonies on this day. For those who are unaware, (or have forgotten) on September 11th, 2001 the fire service lost more firefighters at one incident than ever in its history.

I hope those words don't come back to bite him in the ass. If there's a fire or injury (or worse) I suspect he'll be hearing about it.

Listen I am not trying to start any conflict between Career Vs. Volunteer. I only ask because I am from Long Island where Volunteers make up the majority of the departments. I was just curious about working relationships and Standards.
Has there every been a time in which a Volunteer company has assisted a Career Company and vice versa?

It seems that it's the same story in other combo depts.one half either lost interest,or just don't have the time, and the other is left holding all the cards and run short handed and the politicians don't want to compensate for the lack of manpower. They play Russian roulette with the staff and the residents.

About time someone pulled the curtain back to expose the charade. How many other departments in the county can't meet the NFPA or OSHA standards for minimum staffing yet think they're OK?

They're still not going to be sending enough if they hire four whole guys. Wow.
Just kicking the can down the road. Sooner our later our luck is going to run out and there's going to be a 100% preventable tragedy. We will all call the unwitting victims "hero" and don our spiffy parade uniforms to salute their hearse but we won't fight against the problem that's making them vulnerable now. It's a travesty.

It's sad the levels that some will stoop to just to protect their ego and ensure that their sacred volunteer contingent is protected...all at the cost of the safety of personnel and the citizens he's sworn to protect. Sad really.

It's sad to see that a guy who is paid to do code enforcement and who apparently has been a volunteer firefighter since 1987, would actually make a misleading (flat out wrong) statement such as this. Does he really know little or nothing about fire spread, life safety for human beings who may be inside a home when a fire occurs as well as firefighter safety when arriving at such an incident severely understaffed? Or is he simply against hiring the number of firefighters necessary to keep the public and the firefighters safe?

Everyone is slamming the FF for suing. Maybe this was their last resort. Maybe they tried to get headsets for years and the city shot them down. Do we know that?

To demean the firefighters fighting to protect themselves seems harsh to me. Would you have reacted the same to the FF suing over Nomex or SCBA 25 years ago?
  22. bad box liked a post in a topic by STAT213 in More than 190 Buffalo firefighters sue over volume of sirens
One thing not mentioned in the article is which generation of firefighters is suing. Is it current? Past? Hired thirty years ago?
Barry pointed out siren placement. When did buffalo move their sirens from the cab roof to the bumper? Who hear has ridden in a vehicle with a siren on the roof? It is ungodly loud.
Everyone knows sirens are loud. Biggest questions I see are where was the siren, and were protections offered to mitigate damage.

If I were an African American, I would be insulted by a court decision that declared that the written and practical exams for the job of firefighter discriminated against people of my race. I worked with many dedicated African American Firefighters during my career and all of them scored high enough on both parts of the exam to be appointed and were proud (justifiably) of their accomplishment. Many went on to pass one or more promotional exams during their careers. The fire service needs only the best of the best (regardless of race, sex or religious beliefs) due to the nature of the job. Candidates who need to be recruited (begged) to come and take a written test that now could easily be passed by a grade school student are a hazard to civilians as well as the Firefighters who are forced to respond to dangerous incidents with them.
