Greenburgh PD has acquired, from NYPD surplus, this 2003 Mack MR/Saulsbury Ex-Truck 3 Ex-Truck 5. It will replace their current 1988 International/Hackney that was converted from it's previous life as a Poland Springs delivery truck for the Technical Rescue team, and/or be used to carry SWAT equipment.
All work needed will be done in house by the Greenburgh Town Garage.

    FYI
Utility 147 was acquired to be a prime mover for our support trailer.
It is also going to be a driver training vehicle for any one starting to train for an MPO position.
Right now only 21 year members can train to be a MPO.
This is intended to allow 18 year old drivers the ability to start training on a larger vehicle
without damaging a front line response unit.
Once properly outfitted, at the discretion of the Chief, it may be used for storm duty.
Original cost on this vehicle was over, $105,000.00
We acquired through surplus for $3700.00
    Stay Safe

I thought maybe we could change the tone of what we traditionally see on EMTBravo. I want this to be kind of like the "funny things heard over the radio" thread, and I figured it's about time we all had a good laugh....

This little bit from The Simpsons has been showing up on my Facebook news feed over the last few weeks, and it spawned an idea in my little brain; What funny or awkward situation/story do you have about a time when the alarm went off? I'll start.....
When I was 17 I was a very active junior firefighter/explorer. I was chief of the junior corps, always around the fire house, and a regular at every alarm that wasn't during school hours. Any way, around this point in my life I got a new bed, upgrading from a twin to a full, and I decided to rearrange my bedroom so things would "flow" better. My father, who at this point is a 25 year veteran and ex-chief, tells me that this is a bad idea. When I asked the only thing he told me was, "It's going to ruin your routine." I didn't think too hard about it, and my teenage mind said to rearrange the room anyway. Well, later that night the pager sounded for a residential alarm, I shot out of bed like usual, but instead of running towards the door....WHAM!!!!! I hit the wall and knocked myself over! I was so used to getting out of bed on the right side, I had forgotten that I moved the bed . The best part of the story is as both my parents run past my bedroom door (Mom was a lieutenant at the time), I just hear my dad say, "Told you so."
    What's your funny story?

See you've been a member of this site since 2007, yet I don't see a single incident posted under your account. Why not contribute ?
I used to contribute incident alerts on occasion, but really don't have the time to sit and listen to the scanner for hours on end anymore.
Being that most of these incidents are now instantly posted up on Facebook these days, whats the incentive for users to spend hours listening to an incident rather than spending time with their families or other hobbies just so grateful users like yourself are satisfied ?

Just because you CAN buy something with grant money, doesn't necessarily mean you should. Look at the disastrous Mass Decontamination Trailer CT purchased. One truck and trailer for every municipality with a hospital and an airport. Trailers kept breaking down, company that manufactured/maintained them went out of business. Now, 10 years later, the regional committees are purchasing inflatable decon tents for a fraction of the price. Sure they aren't as sexy looking as the big red trailers and spare rescue trucks "Prime Movers" that everyone got at first, but the tents are a much better use of taxpayer dollars.
Of course there should be a (reasonable) cache of disaster equipment, but if we have trouble providing basic emergency services to the people we're supposed to serve, how are we going to perform in disaster conditions?
Since the money is starting to dry up, people are starting to make wiser choices. But just after 9/11 it was basically a free-for-all and from what I saw in the emergency preparedness community in CT, there were a lot of projects that got funded in the name of the next catastrophe that will never be truly useful.

Well up here it is not a big deal, but where I used to work, it was a big difference.
A door pop was an inconvienced subject and the response was 1 Engine, 1 Ambulance
A trapped subject response was 1 Hurst ® equipped piece, 1 suppression piece, 1 Ambulance, Duty Chief and Safety officer

Actually, I asked whether the size up that was reported on this site was correct for the amount of apparatus that was listed in the run down.
13 Fire Departments for a single story ranch house...sorry for the question, nothing possibly obtuse about this equation.

I agree with x152, you have multiple departments from Westchester, Putnam and even Connecticut on a relocate for a fire in a private dwelling, that's ridiculous

GBFD109, Thanks for taking the time to explain conditions, and the eloquence of your reply, especially in the face of a Monday morning QB questioning the amount of resources called.

As the Operations officer at this incident I think I can shed some light on this situation. First, the property conditions that first due units encountered where deplorable. The entire property was covered in 18-20 inches of snow with one, 12 inch wide footpath barely shoveled to the front door. The initial stretch alone was extremely strenuous and taxing on the manpower.
Once interior, crews encountered extreme Colliers Mansion conditions, preventing them from making an expedient advance on the fire on the first floor. The basement, where the heaviest fire was encountered, was a whole different story. Upon making entry to the basement, crews dealt with floor to ceiling junk as well as a well seasoned pile of firewood and the contents of of a woodworking shop.
As far as the apparatus on scene; in that geographical location, due to the lack of hydrants, we were operating from our tanker district alarm assignments, which brings more tankers than manpower carrying apparatus. The time of day is tough on manpower regardless of conditions. Factor in the conditions, and your burning through fresh bodies faster than you can get them there.
In closing, I would like to personally thank all Mutual aid departments for their quick response and assistance.

so about 3% of all engines in the county were committed to this fire,
But 50% of the tankers were committed. Tells me we have way to many engines, and too few tankers
