Why does it matter aside from maybe helping figure out what is wrong with the patient? Forget about how its just wrong to treat someone differently based upon a medical condition, what if they don't know they're carrying some disease. Everyone gets treated the same unless I suspect an infection requiring droplet precautions.
Moderator note: This was the very last post made by Lenny, before he left us for keeps. RIP.

I've worked the same unit as Lenny for the last year. We were partners for a while, and then mutual partners after I changed tours. I only recently joined this board because of him. I've worked in EMS in various places for the past 7 years and I can say without a doubt that Lenny was one of the finest people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He was a consummate professional, an amazing person and one of my best friends. It hasn't yet sunk in that he is really gone forever. It pains me to think about the life that was cut short, and the amazing career that should have been.

This is quite shocking, the whole situation. I'm asking myself "is this really happening?" It's surreal. ny10570 who we now know his name is Lenny Joyner, see his photo on the Denver news story, has been a regular productive member of this board for years. We know his political leanings, his compassion for others, his decency....yet most of us didn't know him personally.
    I wish I had.
To those members here who had the honor of knowing him, condolences to you all. We all share in your grief.
For all of us here who care, who feel, please take care of yourselves now. Don't be tempted to grab the beers or anything else to drown the pain away.
Talk about it. Write about it. Share your feelings with those of us here who care for you and want you to be okay. That's what this site is about. A Fraternity of sorts. Times like these are the most testing for everybody. Talk about it at the firehouse, the precinct, the ambulance quarters.
Lenny got called home to God way too early, yet he obviously died doing what he wanted to be doing. Living his life the way he wanted it to be. Quite an adventurist it seems. I imagine he was quite ecstatic to reach that peak, to see that view, to be closer to his God.
Our board has another hero now. And his name is Lenny Joyner. God Rest In Peace.
    Edit: Last name proper spelling.

This weekend, at the schoolhouse at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, the United States Military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community will gather for it's annual Ball and Memorial. It is a time to renew friendships and to remember our fallen warriors, whether it be recent or in the distant past. The Technicians names being added to the wall this year are listed below, 18 heroes who gave their lives while protecting their fellow teammates and the units they were assigned to.
Unfortunately I will not be attending this year, but want to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The EOD motto is "Initial Success or Total Failure", but to those of us who earned the Crab at the school we declare, "We Remember"…

as a career wildland firefighter, I can remember when I started for a small New England department, jeans, work boots and a long sleeve shirt was all we had for brush gear (and a damn sight better than bunker gear).. as FFBlaser said, check with your state Forestry Agency (DEP< DNR, etc) they have volunteer fire assistance grants where they will supply or assist your department with PPE, tools, pumps, hoses, booster tanks and often surplus government or military vehicles to be converted into firefighting vehicles, as well as training and Red Card certification, so you can safely and effectively fight wildland fires..
    Be Safe

Being from New Mexico, and A career wild land firefighter as of yesterday... this makes me laugh. Hard.
Not in a bad way... I just think you guys need to look to outside of the box for solutions. There are grants out there for small departments to get PPE. The same as would be for you to a new truck.

Some good points about wildland PPE have been made. Here's some thoughts of this from the left coast, where fighting this kind of firefighting is a common thing.
the limitations of structural PPE have been mentioned and those posters are correct. Limited mobility, bulkiness and heat retention lead to heat exhaustion/stroke.
The US Forest Service personnel wear a specific nomex pant. I'm not sure of serial numbers or anything, but that is what they do. Everyone else wears the commerially made nomex brush coat/pant set, wildland gloves (structure gloves being too bulky) wildland helmet with shield that attaches inside the helmet and comes around to velcro together in front of the face. Goggles for eye protection and heavy duty work boots without steel toes or shanks (when walking on hot coals do you want that heat transfer through the sole to a protection shank in that said sole??).
Everyone should have web gear, with a canteen or 2 and a shelter pack. Here in Cali, no one can be on the fire line without a shelter.
In other posts, or even signatures, I see the phrase "Everyone Goes Home"...if that is the case, why won't you do what is needed all of the time??

Using regular structural turnout gear reduces the firefighter's mobilty in tough terrain. It also increase fatigue, especially in high tempatures.
If your department has the need for a brush truck, then you should have the need for brush turnout gear.

I haven't done one of these in a while. I have been doing some trips, but my time in between has been very busy, so I haven't had the time to post anything. Get ready, here it comes. 4 and half months, to be exact of everybody's favortie Fire Dispatchers journeys!!!
First stop, Nashville. Engine and Truck 28, second due to the Opry, and Cooters Dukes of Hazzard museum!!!

Followed up with Engine 9 and Tower 2 from Downtown.

Next stop, the suburbs and Wilson County Emergency Services Station 31. Here's Engine, Tanker, and Brush 31.

The camera lay dormant for a little while. I had given the Lake Carmel Explorer Post, my fire service alma mater, a little tour around the city. After we got done, I was standing in the Bronx Dispatchers Office when an all hands was transmitted for Echo Place and the Grand Concourse. Here's some shots I took from there. Ladder 59 and Engine 42.

I had heard the new fireboat Bravest was in town, and ran down to the dock to get some shots of that. These are kinda ehh by my standards, but I got better ones coming.

    More coming..

Recently, I had some extra time to take a quick, brief trip down south to Houston. While I was on my way down to Houston, the apparatus I was going to photograph was involved in an MVA and will be out of service for a while. At least I didn't decide to north to go to Dallas-Fort Worth. Got a late start, was going to leave at 5AM but the weather people predicted storms in every city I like to go take photos in. So I slept late, woke up at 9AM, and it was bright and sunny. Go figure.
I got a couple good shots, not as many as I would have liked, though

As of 0800 on April 20th, 2012 the Santa Ana Fire Department will no longer exist. Due to financial problems, after 128 years as of that date they will become a part of the Orange County Fire Authority. With the take over, their rigs are being relogoed as the OCFA. With that in mind, a friend and I made the rounds one final time for prosperity..
As rigs are already being changed, I am glad we did this yesterday...and I am showing everything we photographed..
