Not Westchester, but I figured I'd throw my department in as well...
    Morningside Volunteer Fire Department
Prince George's County, MD Station 827

Ambulance 27: 3,274 (Busiest all-Volunteer Ambulance in the County)
    Engine 27: 1,080
    Rescue Engine 27: 1,323
Rescue Squad 27: 2,357 (Busiest Rescue in the County)
Total Unit Responses: 8,034** (Busiest 100% Volunteer house in the County)

    Source: http://www.pgfdpio.blogspot.com/2016...s-and.html?m=1

**NOTE: The "total unit responses" is the addition of all of these units individually, so inevitably some of those responses are 2 units from our station going on the same call.

Rye needs more paid staffing per shift. They aren't going to solve anything by "recalibrating the dynamics" when volunteers can't even afford to live in the City.

They should be handed down to the next officer in the line.
I won't comment on what happens where I live.

Are we really going to start talking politics here?

Aren't there enough other forums covering this nonsense?

You should get a job in the media. They pay top dollar for sensationalizing things.

To me, it's all about options and flexibility. Know your tools, train with them and use what will work best for the given scenario.
You're lost and stumbling through some smoke, low on air. Another crew finds you and can walk you out. You run out of air before you make it out. Would you rather share air and walk out or take in smoke and have to be dragged? That's a no brainer. Plug in and walk out together. Use the EBSS. If you don't spec it, you can't use it.
Should the EBSS be used by RIT teams as the first line? Nope. Does having it increase your options. Yup. Be smart people.

As I said before, if you can afford both, getting both is the way to go. It gives you multiple options, which is typically better than having few or no options if something bad happens, even if some of the options aren't ideal.
If you would be in a situation where you have to bail out of an upper floor, having a ladder in place is certainly better than not having one to use and jumping, risking serious injury. But, wouldn't it be even better to have a personal escape system available to deploy if the ladder isn't where you need it or can't get there in time?
I don't know about you, but I like the idea of having the option to share air if a RIT pack isn't immediately available rather than have a brother get hurt or die because there was no other option than for them to breathe toxic smoke or suffocate.

That's a pretty harsh view to take. We all take risks every day, some more than others. Would your family rather you not come home someday due to an apparatus accident? Or should we all travel with the flow of traffic? You can get yourself so worked up over the law and your own safety that the difference between a firefighter and a mailman is the uniform.
How about using common sense about when to breathe air. So don't mask up, but stay out of the smoke plume, maybe put the mask up to your face to take that quick peek, even mask up if you have to crawl in. But let's be realistic about air use. I'd bet some/many/mot subject themselves to greater risk dying from an OJI from failure to train than contracting cancer from limited smoke sxposure. Of course we cannot pinpoint cancer causes, so I guess proof would be hard to come by. Presumption of cancer is somewhat tough when we got guys like the chief here, smoking? Who'll prove which smoke caused his cancer?
We take risks, we should minimize risks wherever we can without sacrificing the principles of the job. While I'm with M'Ave, in not condemning these guys for lack of masks, I think they could have been better.

It will be a straight stick quint. Should work out much better for them than that oversized E-One POS Tower Quint they had previously.

First, no hoseline because the Truck company arrived first and no Engine was on scene yet in the video. Secondly, as "M' Ave" pointed out they took a dash inside, save your air for when you need it. I don't have a issue with what they did (as far as masks) if they felt they were good to go in then so be it whats it matter to the rest of us? Personal choice.

Makes sense. I've heard a lot of dissention between those in charge and the membership in the past couple of years over finances and the such.

I know they all have other jobs. I was with someone once who needed an ambulance and when the small cart showed up there was a 3 man crew. One was an elevator mechanic, another was a ticket clerk and I think the third was a track worker.
A few years ago I took my EMT refresher at the yard in Stamford, I was one of only 4 in the class not to work for the railroad. At the time they said they had the goal of having an EMT on every track crew, because they would be closer to any incident than a local service.

I would rather have the "extra" guy on the floor. All day, everyday. Having a trained firefighter stuck in a room answering a phone and yapping on a radio instead of pulling hose is a waste of resources. Especially considering 60 control is there AND available to do the job FOR you.
Can you really look me in the face and say "I'd rather have firefighter Joe in the radio room and not helping us make the stretch down a smoke filled hallway because he really is more helpful to me on the radio than on the line." If so, you are whacked.

Time they start outlawing assault skid-steers. Painted green and with tracks, must be militarized, making it a much more effective killing machine! It's the Bushmaster of the earthwork industry!

For those bleeding hearts including Obama who wants to take away this type of equipment from law enforcement I wonder how many cop's lives this piece of machine saved.
  21. SageVigiles liked a post in a topic by antiquefirelt in Could CAFS-Equipped Chiefs Cars Be A Thing?
Too much equipment could allow some inexperienced persons to lose sight of the big picture and become directly involved at the task level. Much like having booster reels, if it's there it can be misused where strict guidelines are not routinely followed. When the IC gets directly involved at the task level, other things get missed. And if you had it on board and did not deploy it, it could bite you. Anyone remember Dallas FD not maintaining the pumps on their quints yeas ago? Having equipment and failing to use it can become a legal nightmare when people are looking to pint the finger of blame, which is sadly becoming ever-more-present in public service.

Picture quality isn't the best, but here's the latest apparatus update from Morningside VFD down here in Prince George's County, MD.
The refurb of the new-to-us Engine 827 is almost complete. Lettering was completed a few days ago. Still needs the Roto-Ray and the 27 on the grille, but so far she's looking pretty good.

Also, the new-to-us Ambulance 827 has arrived at a shop in Maryland. Its going to need a few months of TLC before its ready for the streets, but we're looking forward to placing this unit in service. Once it's completed, it will be the first time in many years that all of the apparatus in the station are owned by the company.

Justifiably proud of what we accomplished, the Instructors who gave their time and most importantly the students, who persevered through the class. We now pass them on to the capable hands of the SFD training division for the FF-1 program at the Stamford Regional Fire School on Sept 8th

As the title of the article states we are now going full bore to recruit new members, who will in their turn go through the Recruit program as well. To date we've had a better than expected amount of interest, which jumped yesterday due to the article, so with some hard work we should reach our goal of 75 new members this year.
