Yeah, I have to also ask why? I understand the full time staff were laid off but why sell the rig when there are older trucks in the fleet? If it's because it was the full timers rig than that's just petty.

    BINGO !!!

Getting a new rig for the current chief's company (engine 60 aka Reliance E&H) was one of the many stupid reasons for the layoff. I truly believe the layoffs will come back to haunt them if not soon, definitely later. BTW, they're using the other paid rig, eng 59, for a spare.

One thing has nothing to do with the other......unless your trying to stir things up.

Just a taxpayer (Frost025) of Port Chester wondering why the politicians say there's no money for career staff, but plenty of money for a new rig ? Is the current R40 that worn out or beat up ? Just wondering.

The reality is there are two fire services when it comes to most (of these types) rules and regulations, municipal departments and then all others. Most municipalities have strict rules to protect themselves from liability and grievances. While the fire chief's son could be treated like anyone else in reality, just a mere perception can create problems. Most of the time it's something petty and stupid, not the big promotion or preferential assignments. But, in reality, does the Lt. worry he cannot discipline this FF in the same manner as he would otherwise? Can the crew complain about admin without offending the bosses son? Why did he didn't he get forced for OT?  The list of ways for other firefighters to be aggrieved is endless, add in that you're closely related to a boss and that just multiplies.

     You make some good points.

This same scenario exists in the City of Rye FD.  To his credit, the volunteer chief lets the career Lt. do his job regarding the career staff. And, how many father-son teams are there in the FDNY which involve the father an officer and the son a firefighter. Yes, they're usually assigned in different houses, but sometimes in the same battalion.  The powers that be in Peekskill saw the injustice and went with good common sense. I hope everything works out.

I believe there are models of TDA's that have a pin in them. If you only have one driver and no tiller-man, the truck can be driven as a straight ladder. If you've got both drivers, you remove the pin and bingo, you're into a TDA. Best of both worlds; however, I can't speak to the maneuverability when the pin is in. Cool video anyhow. Watch it again and see how the rear of the TDA just misses the garbage can on the right side of the road. Looks like inches!!

The pin is there for delivery of the apparatus and taking it for maintenance not for responding to an emergency. Without a tillerman, all the advantages of a TDA are lost.

If I am not mistaken the Consolidation Plan submitted several years ago consisting of around   10 willing Departments and District would have put as many as 26 men and on the scene in 6 minutes on three engines, two ladders , a heavy rescue and Incident Commander , the location of this fire was a perfect example.

The craziest part of the whole plan would have been the closest firehouse to the call responded, despite municipal boundaries could you imagine that ?????

    Bingo.

Consolidation was a great idea, so great, it wasn't implemented. Why? Archaic NYS laws. Remember Westchester2000, that large loose leaf book that resulted from an expensive study. Made a pretty good door chock.

Isn't the SFD station in question closed due to structural problems ?
