    Here's the million dollar question....

Who's going to staff it?  It is going to be a volunteer system, much like the Westchester Haz-mat team, which due to slow response times, has been skipped over many a time for a properly staffed rig?

Tech team responses require an immense amount of training, and if you get the cert once and never handle the equipment for months, you're gonna lose that skill...

As of January 1st it is 30. It was 27 for the last 15-20 years

Article in LoHud today about the subject. Very in depth, also spoke to the need to increase staffing in the area.

Let's look at these key points

    1) we have actually gotten to the point that we are doing less with less.

    2) it's not an extra person, it's the majority of companies are running with what the department standards say is sub standard

    3) great question, but has anyone considered that the injury rates have exploded as manpower has dropped? What are the medical cost, the OT cost to cover the injured member and the increased pension and disability costs gotten us?

    4) The University of Rhode Island School of Economics did a study on the Providence FD about 25 years ago and determined that 3 man companies cost more than 4 man companies after one calculated the above injury costs.

I'm sure everything from the pump back is "normal". But I too am surprised they haven't gone with a custom cab due to safety, user-friendliness (not a word I know), and most likely better maneuverability around city streets.

Lol probably when the DPW starts using custom chassis.

When will they ever get a normal looking engine.

At risk of unintentionally insulting volunteers, I might ask if the FASNY study took into account how much money would be saved in property/insurance losses if a paid staffed FD was there to effect more positive outcomes sooner? Not a knock on the potential quality of work that a VFD can accomplish, but a realistic view of how much different a fire looks at minute 4 vs. minute 12. Take the same firefighters put them in the station when the call comes in nearly every time, and see how that affects the outcomes.

One thing is for sure, not all fire hose is created equal. A lot of hose is manufactured in China as a result of rich corporate types who don't want to pay Americans a living wage for them to produce a quality product.

Rye needs more paid staffing per shift. They aren't going to solve anything by "recalibrating the dynamics" when volunteers can't even afford to live in the City.

WPFD does not normally respond to EMS calls. In the event WP's EMS provider, Transcare, is tied up, the FD will respond and provide care until an ambulance arrives. WP has 3 ambulances in the city that run out of Station 2.

Per a reliable source, Yonkers has ordered the following from Ferrara Fire Apparatus under an existing HGAC cooperative purchasing contract:
-4 New Ferrara Ultra Engines, with stainless steel bodies, built to the same spec as the current Engine 303 and Engine 304, assignments pending to replace 2005/2006 American LaFrance Eagles
-1 New Ferrara Inferno Tower Ladder 75' Midmount, built to the same spec as Tower Ladder 71, for assignment to Tower Ladder 75
-1 New Ferrara Inferno 100' HD Rearmount, for assignment to Ladder 74. Ferrara's Aerials are produced by Smeal, and will include the same custom jacking and leveling capabilities of Yonkers current fleet of HME/Smeals.
All assignments are tentative and subject to change.
A new Rescue is also on the drawing board.

How come when New Rochelle has a simple room and contents fire, they don't have to call half the county? In fact, this morning they didn't even need to call mutual aid and still had an Engine and Truck in service.

It's a disgrace and the city should be ashamed of itself. Newburgh is already understaffed and this is only going to make it worse.
To expect the feds to continue funding their fire department staffing forever is ludicrous. It was an infusion, a shot in the arm, it wasn't forever.
I hope the displaced FF get jobs elsewhere ASAP!
