You have to keep in mind what's typically driving this.  Many municipalities are making significant changes as a result of the various lawsuits regarding hiring practices.  They are trying to avoid being the next one to be sued.  They are more worried about making it appear that they are trying to diversify than making sure they have quality recruits.

    Good morning everyone,

My name is Tim Collins and I am a career firefighter here in Westchester County. I am also a certified Personal Trainer who specializes in functional fitness for firefighters and other First Responders.
As you may know, most firefighting related deaths are due to cardiovascular issues. I am passionate about lowering that number in any manner I can. I would like to offer a free fitness consultation to your department to help your members lower their risk of a cardiac event. The consultation would consist of meeting with you and discussing what fitness equipment you have available, and a tour of your firehouse/police precinct to see what space is available. Next, I would design a workout program based on your department's capabilities and workload demands to help your members improve their abilities and proficiency in regards to physical fitness on the fire ground. Please contact me via cell phone at (914) 329-8406 or email at floorabovefitness@gmail.com. You and your members can also view my Facebook or Instagram pages by searching “Floor Above Fitness” to see daily firefighter fitness workouts.

I have reached to quite a few departments already, but I figured this would be the best spot to let people know about the services I provide.  I work with ALL First Responders.  I have coached people through the CPAT and NYPD JST.  I was formerly a police officer in the Bronx for over 3 years.  If you or anyone you know is applying to upcoming tests (CPAT/JST/PFT), send my info to them.  Though it may seem like I am specifically for firefighters, all 3 services are facing issues of cardiovascular problems, healthy eating, and lack of physical fitness.  I have already worked with the Ardsley Fire Department and they have seen great results!

I have designed a 10 Week Workout Program specifically for the CPAT and do offer personal training sessions.  If you are interested, email me and we can talk.  If you guys have any questions on fitness, eating habits, or anything text/call/email.  Or if you just want free workouts to do at work, they are posted daily on Facebook and Instagram, just search "Floor Above Fitness".

Stay safe everyone and Happy New Year,
    Tim Colins

Lesson learned for the Fire Service on limited access highways and interstates, position a blocking apparatus between on coming traffic and operating units. Know how to slant blocking rig to deflect a vehicle away from the troops should it be struck.
Better yet shut down traffic, at least till the emergency phase of operation is under control,

Huh? Why lower the volume when you can just (maybe a law issues) limit the use of the siren to "as needed"? It would seem lowering the volume will result in the siren being ineffective when it's needed (inattentive motorists). I doubt the sirens used in the firetrucks or PD vehicles are any different in output, merely just the use as noted. No doubt this petitioner did not seek any "expert" opinions as to the problem and other solutions.

"the heat build up raises the pressure"Are they talking about the bottles be "warm" post fire or do they realize the filling process generates heat? I have to wonder how fast their filling their bottles. "Hot filling" speeds the process but always results in shrinkage (never good). 700 psi seems like a significant amount that likely is the direct result of speed filling the cylinders.

You can't judge a book by its cover. Went to very nice home, EMS call, well kept property, house looked fine, BMW in the driveway, lady owner was a buyer for a major department store, impeccably dressed, go inside, nightmare on Elm Street.  Thank god it was an EMS call and not a fire.
  25. BFD1054 liked a post in a topic by lt411 in Hoarders: How firefighters battle 'Collyer conditions'
Had many "Collyer's mansion " apt. fires over the years. I remember one in particular in an illegal basement apt. in the Bronx. The Deputy Chief assigned my  squad company the task of doing a "secondary search" in that basement apartment. The bedroom was particularly stacked with debris/junk everywhere, and the queen size bed had 3-4 ft of clothes/junk piled on it. Ironically we had drilled earlier in the night tour on the proper way to do a thorough secondary search. As my guys moved the debris off the bed, we found a body - a rather obese male in his 30's with his throat slit open from ear to ear. The murdered victim was on the wrong end of a drug deal gone bad. Needless to say the Battalion chief and the Deputy chief were very happy that we had done a "good secondary". Nothing worse that the fire marshals or the detectives finding a DOA after the fire units have left the scene. If you are going to do a job, "do it right".
